Volunteer Programs

Thanks to volunteers, Miss Eloise’s request to have her family home opened to the public can be realized. The daily tours offered through the museum are given by volunteers. The background of these volunteers range from mothers at home with pre-schoolers to practicing art therapists. All volunteers bring one element to the museum – their interest in and enthusiasm for the Victorian Era.
So …

What makes for an outstanding volunteer?

a desire to seek new knowledge and to share it with visitors
communication skills necessary to interact with visitor of all ages
dependability
physical ability to climb stairs
a commitment to preservation

But I don’t know enough …

Orientation sessions and training materials are supplied to all volunteers; the museum has numerous reference books to supplement these materials. Volunteers may begin at any time during the open season, April through December.

When do I work and what exactly do I do?
Volunteers normally contribute one day every week or every other week to the museum. They not only provide guided tours to the public and for pre-arranged groups of visitors, but they also work to help produce the special programs and events throughout the year – making Christmas tree decorations, serving refreshments, story-telling, preparing materials for children’s programs, baking …… many talents from the many volunteers is what makes our offerings successful and special.

I’m interested; what should I do now?

Contact the museum at 757-623-9814 and ask for a docent/volunteer application.

Thank you for considering sharing your talents, your creativity and your sense of dedication with the Hunter House Victorian Museum. In return the museum will provide you with a delightful atmosphere in which to pursue your Victorian interests and many resources to help you in those pursuits.
