How many consortia are in the United States?
There are approximately 125 consortia in the United States involved in serious
cooperative efforts. These consortia vary in size from three institutions to
as many as a hundred.
What are the most popular programs for consortia?
Cross-registration, library cooperation, faculty development and cooperative
purchasing are the some of the most popular programs consortia are involved
in. However, each consortium has its own specific emphasis and there are
literally hundreds of different programs. The Consortium Directory is an ACL
publication which can be very helpful in determining what consortia are doing.
Can we get help if we are planning to start a consortium?
The Association for Consortium Leadership is a great resource for finding out
the do's and don'ts when beginning a consortium. The membership of ACL
includes consortium directors with years of experience who are always willing
to give advice or if necessary serve as consultants to aid a beginning
consortium.
Is there an opportunity to meet people involved in consortium work?
The ACL annual conference is held each year in Washington, DC. This is the
best time to meet the people in the business of promoting cooperation in
higher education. The conference usually draws between thirty and forty consortium directors; they
represent the most progressive and dynamic organizations, and they also bring samples of their publications to share. ACL's annual
conference is a great way to view all the publications of the consortia and to
share ideas. The conference program and the informal conversation that takes place during program breaks is always very helpful, no matter how long
someone has been in the business.
E-mail Discussion List
ACL has its own e-mail discussion group which gives members the opportunity to
raise important issues and receive immediate responses. This service allows
members to seek as well as give advice to others involved in consortium work. If
you would like to be added to the list, send a message to
Nicola Beltz.
